League of Incredible Greed
Riot Games, makers of League of Legends, have decided to sell more obscenely overpriced digital content. They have sold a bundle of skins before for 500 USD. Game companies making content digital content that is infinitely reproducible needs to occur much more regulation.
Take Riot for example. They have their own ‘currency’ that intentionally obscures the actual price of the skin. Additionally, when you buy the Riot Points, they tend to give you some amount extra and that lingers in your account psychologically prodding you into buying more to attempt to zero out the account value. The consumer should only be allowed to pay in their government currency or a way to refund the Riot Points for real money. Lots of other large gaming companies are guilty of the same sin. Epic Games. Roblox. Additionally, there are other currencies within the game used to purchase or unlock skins that only serve to further confuse their consumer.
Another facet is the new skins are locked behind a ‘Gacha’ system, which is more or less a lottery system. Riot attempts to be ‘generous’ by capping the number of ‘pulls’ (lottery tickets) at a certain amount. Honestly, Gacha should be banned for anyone under 18, but I’d like it to completely gone. In the end, this is just another form of enshittification.
